FEDERALIST NO. 68
The Message: The Electoral College system of electing a president is one of the most effective ways to preserve the American republic. The presence of an independent group of electors will protect the presidency from special interests and insure that all citizens—even those who live in small or isolated areas, are proportionally represented.
Original Quote: “They have not made the appointment of the President to depend on any preexisting bodies of men who might be tampered with beforehand to prostitute their voices …”
Relevance to Today: A few years ago, George Soros’ son Jonathan wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled “It’s Time to Junk the Electoral College.” This idea, popular in progressive circles, is ostensibly meant to bring more “fair” and direct democracy to America. State legislatures across the country have joined in the crusade by either passing or proposing laws that would eliminate the Electoral College and throw all the states’ votes to the candidate who won the nationwide popular vote. That would weaken the influence of smaller states and strengthen the control of big ones, like New York and California—which, big surprise, usually happen to vote for the Democratic Party. We all must remember why the Electoral College system exists in the first place, and the Federalist Papers are a great place to start.
